Maliyyah Little Stars Day Care is moving to this storefront next to a corner grocer at 1417 Wharton St. in Point Breeze.
Fun Fitness Girls stopped exercising its right to exist this year, so a new tenant is moving into the now-vacant commercial space at 1427 Wharton St. in Point Breeze. The Zoning Board of Adjustment approved on Aug. 28 a daycare center for the ground floor of the house to hold 15 children.
Shawn Ward, lawyer for the property owner, has been down this road before. In 2008 he received approval for a building with ground floor commercial space with two apartments on the second and third floors. However, at the time, the commercial space was limited to retail, dry cleaning, and office space and any educational use was not allowed.
But, with 16 signatures of nearby residents supporting the daycare facility and the backing of the South Broad Street Neighborhood Association (with provisos), he convinced the ZBA to support the rezoning variance allowing a daycare center. The new owner, Avis Green, accepted the provisos of the SBSNA, which dealt with not having children younger than a certain age who need cribs.
?She agreed to the provisos,? Ward said. ?As it is, the space doesn?t have room for the furnishings, cribs and such, for younger children.?
Chairwoman Lynette Brown-Sow asked if there would be any outdoor play area for the children. Ward answered no, but Green said that she could take the children to a nearby park that is a block away.
Peter Zutter, president of the SBSNA, said, ?We met with the applicant and we?re not opposing it as long as the provisos are accepted.?
However, Brown-Sow said that she did receive two letters of opposition to the center but that the writers didn?t sign their names or list who they were associated with in any fashion, so Ward asked that they not be permitted, and Brown-Sow obliged.
Green is moving her existing Mahdiyyah Little Stars daycare facility from 1317 S. Juniper St. to this location. The site is near? Ellsworth?Federal station on the Broad Street Line and next to a corner store in Point Breeze.
