MONTGOMERY (AP) ? Shoeless Joe Jackson might have asked if THIS is heaven.

Here was one of his thick-handled bats, being gripped lovingly and studied for cleat nicks and baseball smudges from games he played nearly 100 years ago. Newly arrived, it soon will be carefully displayed, near a rare Jackson signature, and in the days and years to come, it will be viewed by dedicated fans who will also be mingling with stars of the game.

Jackson, depicted in the movie "Field of Dreams," was banned from baseball for his role in the 1919 "Black Sox" World Series-fixing scandal, by lore disappointing a young fan who shouted: "Say it ain't so, Joe!" But the ill-fated star has a place amid such greats as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron in the Green Diamond Gallery in suburban Cincinnati.

The gallery showcases a top private collection of baseball memorabilia while hosting a small club of fans who in recent months have been able to ask pitcher Jack Morris about falling short of making the Hall of Fame, slugger Jose Canseco about illicit steroid use, and manager Tony La Russa about secrets of the St. Louis Cardinals' success.

"There's Cooperstown, then it's Green Diamond, and I don't know what would be a close third," La Russa said, referring to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, celebrating its annual induction weekend in upstate New York. The Hall's president, Jeff Idelson, has visited the gallery and agrees it's unlike anything else he's seen outside Cooperstown.

The gallery's roots are in a child's first trip to a baseball game five decades ago.

Bob Crotty still savors memories of the sights, sounds and smells of Crosley Field, then home of the Cincinnati Reds. He was drawn to the souvenir stand, buying buttons and other inexpensive trinkets.

And so it began.

"Once I got the bug, I got it pretty bad," Crotty said.

The preteen boy cut lawns for cash to fund his new passion, and he spent hours writing letters to teams requesting yearbooks and other items. His bedroom desk and shelves filled, then his entire bedroom, then the family's basement. Continued...

He networked with collectors and learned the best auction houses and authenticators while becoming a top executive in the family-run Van Dyne Crotty uniform company. When it was bought in 2006 by industry giant Cintas Corp., Crotty suddenly had plenty of time and money ? and a very large collection.

"I was pretty much at a crossroads ... either get rid of all this stuff or do something with it," said Crotty, now 54. He met with Kevin Manley, who had worked for a nonprofit that Crotty's company supported, to brainstorm.

Most collectors by nature want to protect their privacy and valuables, so not many fans get to view what they have.

"I always wanted to give this a home where I could display it, share it in some capacity, maybe create an environment where we could do something different," said Crotty, who made Manley the manager of what opened in 2007. It included:

? A one-floor exhibit area packed with 4,000 items such as autographed baseballs, game-used jerseys, ballpark relics, rare documents, photos and letters, organized into categories such as Hall of Famers, greatest teams, the Negro Leagues and a tribute to character and courage honoring Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig and Roberto Clemente.

? A private club, initially 100 dues-paying members, then upped to 250 with two levels of membership. The club, which includes female members, has a waiting list for the few spots in the top-level Wright Society that open each year, at $2,000 annual dues.

? A charitable foundation, supporting baseball-related activities for economically disadvantaged youths and disabled and sick children. Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench has headlined fundraising events.

? Monthly receptions, featuring question-and-answer sessions with baseball's stars and characters. Hall of Fame pitchers Steve Carlton, Bert Blyleven and Jim Bunning (also a former U.S. senator) were among last year's speakers, and hitting star Rod Carew is coming up in August.

"I was overwhelmed," said La Russa, who spoke last month. "The collection is staggering, the whole concept of the club ... You are surrounded by people who love the game."

Among them: Buck Newsome, an investment adviser who was part of initial word-of-mouth membership recruiting. Continued...

"I was like a little kid again. It was just unbelievable," Newsome recalled. "Within five or 10 minutes, I asked, 'How do I join?'"

Newsome tries to make every meeting, appreciating the chance to rub elbows with stars in a convivial atmosphere for hearing inside stories. Speakers like talking baseball with knowledgeable fans who aren't hounding them for autographs; after visiting, La Russa decided to help arrange for a Cardinal predecessor, Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst, to make an upcoming appearance.

Rentals for special events such as off-site corporate meetings and wedding rehearsal dinners help cover operating costs. Tight space and security concerns restrict numbers of visitors, but the gallery opens once or twice a year for paid tours.

Crotty, meanwhile, keeps adding. Besides the Jackson bat, he just bought Warren Spahn's Hall of Fame ring after the late pitcher's son put memorabilia up for auction. He doesn't disclose prices paid and said the only way to know the value of his collection would be to sell it.

"When you're a collector, it can be a lonely journey," Crotty said. "The beauty of having this model is I can continue to collect, and I've made friendships and relationships you can't put a monetary value on."

Android 4.3 to breathe new life in last year?s Nexus 7 (2012) by speeding up I/O performance

Nexus-7-fetured-LARGE

With the all new Nexus 7 (2013) model now readily available for purchase across the US, many of you who purchase the last year?s model might be looking at your old device with discontent. There have been countless reports from users that, while the device performed snappily enough at first, it soon became bogged down over time, sluggish to the point of where it was completely unusable.

Before you throw that old device in the bin, you might wanna wait for the incoming Android 4.3 update. As discovered by AnandTech, some new lines of code found inside Android 4.3 could vastly improve performance, making the device feel like new again. This has something to do with TRIM being enabled in Android 4.3 that tidies up the device?s internal memory, dumping out all those old files like a laxative. While we anxiously await Android 4.3 to hit our own Nexus 7 (2012), let us know if you?ve experienced any speed improvements after updating your device (either officially, or unofficially).

Tour bus flips over in wash amid Ariz. rain storm

DOLAN SPRINGS, Ariz. (AP) ? A Las Vegas-bound tour bus carrying 33 people was swept away by Arizona floodwaters as the driver attempted to cross a wash before turning the bus on its side amid heavy rains.

No one was injured. The bus returning on a rural Arizona road from a day-trip to the Grand Canyon's west rim was pushed down the wash for an estimated 300 yards around 1:50 p.m. near Kingman, said Patrick Moore, chief of the Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District, which had firefighters at the scene. The crash happened as northern Arizona was hit with a second day of heavy rain.

The area where the bus accident occurred received 0.75 inches of rain in about an hour on Sunday afternoon, said Chris Stumpf, a National Weather Service forecaster in Las Vegas. A flash flood warning was in effect when the accident occurred, he said, and the bus driver shouldn't have been driving through the area at the time.

"It was a really strong storm dumping quite a bit of rain ... and it caused flash flooding," Stumpf said. "They were driving on a portion of the road where they shouldn't have tried to drive across. They should not have been driving through there."

Rhonda Ho, operations manager for Canyon Coach Lines, said the bus owned by the Las Vegas-based company was returning from a day-trip to the Grand Canyon's west rim when driver Joseph Razon saw a car right in front of him go through a section of the highway covered by some water, and "he thought, if a car can go through it, I can go through it."

"Then he got slammed by a rushing current of water that came out of nowhere," she said. "He was driving in almost neck-deep water and trying to control the bus while it was floating."

After being swept down the flood of water, she said, Razon determined it would be unsafe for the bus to float anymore. He then intentionally tilted the bus against an embankment so it would stop and passengers could escape through its roof. People inside the bus were able to climb out of the driver's side windows and walked to dry land.

"I'm glad the driver kept his cool and everybody got out safely. No one screamed on the bus and everyone kept their cool and that's amazing," Ho said.

She described Razon as a "very professional driver" with a spotless record. He has worked for the company since 2005.

Kingman is near the Arizona-Nevada stateline and about 100 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The bus passengers and driver returned on another bus to Las Vegas, where Ho was able to speak to the driver.

On Sunday evening, as a tow truck was preparing to take away the bus, it was lying on its side and had grass and other debris hanging from it. Two escape hatches on its roof were opened. Writing on the side of the bus said: "C.H. Destination" and "DBA: Canyon Coach Lines"

The passengers were no longer at the scene. The company had sent another bus to pick them up.

There were some swift-water rescues of stranded motorists Saturday night after a storm dropped nearly 2 inches of rain in about 90 minutes around Kingman, Stumpf said.

The flash flood warning around the accident scene has expired, he said, but there's a chance for more heavy rain and another similar warning on Monday.

The crash happened as Northern Arizona was hit with a second day of heavy rain.

The Arizona Department of Transportation closed an 18-mile stretch of Interstate-40 Saturday night between Flagstaff and Kingman because of the flash flooding.

Me and My Tattoo: Chinese characters and plum blossom logo

Me and My Tattoo: Chinese characters and plum blossom logo

Jason Ludwig Jason Ludwig

This week we meet?Jason Christopher Ludwig, 24, Thornton Heath

Why this design?

I have been training Wing Chun Kuen Kung Fu since I was 1994, and teaching since 2008. The big characters going down the middle of my right arm are the Chinese characters 'Wing Chun Kuen' and the circular 'plum blossom' logo were inked in celebration of passing my 1st Technician Grade (black sash).

How much did it cost?

?300 all together I think, under two different artists

Did it hurt? What did it feel like?

Nothing unbearable, it felt just as I thought; like a needle lightly plucking my arm ridiculously fast.

What did your friends say?

They think they're great, the 'motto' tattoos seem to be the everyone's favourite.

Have you got any more? If so what are they?

The other one is on my left shoulder, mirroring the circular plum blossom logo. It is the called 'Rivergram' - the logo of one of my bands The River, and based on the design of the famous chalice well, in Glastonbury.

Where did you get it done and who did it?

The 'WCK' characters with plum blossom logo, and the Rivergram, were done by Leo Rios from Timebomb, in Croydon. The chiselled motto ones were done by my good friend Kellz Morgan from Stung By Steel, in Wallington.

Have you got some ink to show off? Send a picture of your tattoo to digitalmedia@london.newsquest.co.uk and leave your contact details - we could be writing about you soon!

Normal sibling aggression is not so normal | Dayton Children's Blog

During my typical clinical interview with parents, I always ask about sibling interactions and usually get an answer like this. ?They argue and fight all the time but it?s just normal sibling stuff.?

I?ve never quite understood that response. How can fighting, name calling, and intimidation be acceptable at home but be labeled as bullying and harmful if those same behaviors occur with non-family members?? The thinking that because sibling aggression is common that it is also normal just never made sense to me.

Recent research published in the June, 2013 issue of Pediatrics found that aggression among siblings is not as benign as most parents would believe. Researchers studied the impact of verbal and physical aggression among siblings and found that the negative impact on kids? mental health was virtually identical to that of such aggression among non-family members.

I can understand the reluctance of parents to intervene whenever their children get into disagreements. Kids need to learn how to navigate such problems on their own, without the constant intervention of parents. However, your job as parents is to teach kids how to resolve such disagreements without name calling, bullying or fighting.

?

1. Make your rules very clear and specific. I suggest that parents of young children make out a list of words and behaviors that will not be tolerated in their family. Try this as a simple guideline. If you wouldn?t want your child to use such words outside your house, then don?t allow them to use the same words within your family.

?

2. Coach kids how to solve their own problems. This stuff doesn?t come easily or naturally, either for adults or children. This means helping youngsters understand the world from another?s viewpoint, which admittedly can be rather challenging! Most kids think in terms of winning or losing, not compromising.

Teach kids about self-control, and learning strategies to relax, get control of their emotions, and think of lots of possible different solutions to a problem. This takes some time, so don?t get discouraged if your youngster or teen gets emotional or argumentative. These can be among the most valuable life skills your child learns from you.

Explain this as a very simple four-step process?-define the problem, list alternatives, discuss the pros and cons of each, and arrive at a plan. Whether dealing with a toddler or teen, keep coaching your child through the same four steps.

3. Don?t tolerate bad behavior.? Aggression among siblings is one of the easiest problems to stop. It ends when parents decide that it is not acceptable in their family, and they punish that behavior every time it occurs. Within two weeks, the problem disappears.

You?ll be pleasantly surprised with the impact on your family when you decide to stop tolerating bad behavior among your children.

Google blasted for persisting online drug ads

JACKSON, Miss.? -- Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says Google (GOOG) is still selling Internet ads promoting illegally sold drugs, and that the technology giant refuses to drop those websites from search results.

The Democrat demanded Thursday that Google CEO Larry Page attend a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General on June 18 in Boston to answer questions, saying earlier responses were "evasive" and "overly technical." Hood, who is one of three co-chairs of the association's intellectual property committee, said that if Google doesn't cooperate, he's going to recommend forcing the company to produce documents.

"I hope the CEO is not aware of what Google has been doing," Hood said at a news conference.

Company spokesman Aaron Stein said Google takes safety "very seriously" and has explained to Hood how it fights illegal pharmacies.

"In the last two years, we've removed more than 3 million ads for illegal pharmacies," he wrote in an email. "We continue to work on this issue with industry partners and groups like the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies."

The Mountain View-based company also said it has responded to more than 16 million requests in the last month alone for copyrighted material to be removed.

Stein didn't respond to further questions about whether Page would attend the meeting.

Google paid $500 million to the federal government in 2011 to settle claims over ads sold to pharmacies that were illegally shipping drugs into the United States.

Hood said it's wrong for Google to auto-complete searches helping someone to buy drugs without a prescription or illegally download music and movies. He reiterated those points in a May 21 letter to Page, noting that Google has blocked search results for child pornography and won't auto-complete phrases such as "free child porn."

Hood wrote that providing search results or auto-complete for a phrase such as "buy oxycodone online no prescription" similarly promotes illegal activity and should be blocked. He also wants Google to remove content from its YouTube unit that instructs people on how to buy drugs without a prescription, saying that Google is making money from ads that appear alongside those and every other YouTube video.

Hood warned that Google could be prosecuted as an accessory before the fact for illegal drug sales. He also said state nuisance laws could apply.

"We would hold a skating rink responsible if this activity was going on around it," he said.

Hood said officials have been able to get credit card companies to cut off payments to online retailers they consider illegal and have improved communications between law enforcement and Facebook.

"Google ought to do like other companies involved," Hood said.

Hood said a lawsuit against Google could be difficult, but he noted that attorneys general worked together to sue tobacco companies. Mississippi was a leader in that effort, but the suit and the money it brought for plaintiffs' attorneys brought a furious backlash from state Republicans. They continue to say that Democratic attorney generals give lucrative cases to their political allies, who in turn give campaign contributions back to the official.?

PIERMONT, N.Y. (AP) ? A deadly nighttime speedboat crash on the Hudson River hurled a bride-to-be and her fiance's best man into the water and left the groom and three others injured, including a friend charged with vehicular manslaughter on Saturday, just two weeks before the couple was to exchange their vows.

Six friends were on board the boat Friday night when it struck a barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge, sending Lindsey Stewart and Mark Lennon, both 30, into the water and injuring the other four, including groom-to-be Brian Bond, officials said.

A body matching Stewart's description was recovered Saturday while Lennon is presumed dead, Rockland County Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera said. The search for Lennon's body will resume Sunday.

"The search has been suspended this evening and the tides have a lot to do with that," Barbera said. "We'll start again first thing in the morning."

Authorities charged the boat's operator, Jojo John, 35, of Nyack, with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault. He was arraigned from a hospital bed and ordered held on $250,000 bond, Barbera said. John is suspected of operating the boat while intoxicated but authorities are still awaiting the result of blood tests.

Attempts to reach John's family were not immediately successful and it was not clear if he had an attorney.

Earlier Saturday, authorities pulled a woman's body from the water that matched Stewart's description. Officials were working to confirm that the body was Stewart's but it was unclear how long that could take.

Stewart and Lennon were thrown from the boat when it struck a barge carrying materials for the construction of a replacement for the Tappan Zee Bridge, about a half-hour's drive north of New York City.

The boat, a 21-foot Stingray, had left the village of Piermont for a short trip across the river to Tarrytown, authorities said.

Stewart, of Piermont, worked for an insurance company. She and Bond were set to be married Aug. 10, family members said.

Bond was knocked unconscious in the crash but later woke and was able to call 911, Stewart's mother, Carol said.

Stewart's stepfather, Walter Kosik, said the couple have known each other since they were young children and used to go to church together.

"They have been friends the whole time, and they fell in love about 3 ? years ago," Kosik said.

They were to be married at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, with a reception at a vineyard in Hillburn, he said.

Barbera declined to identify the other people aboard the boat and had no information on their conditions. He said the barge was equipped with lights, but it was still difficult to see on the water late at night.

The New York State Thruway Authority, which is overseeing the bridge project, said it was reviewing safety procedures.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time," the authority said in a statement. It added that the lighting on the barges appeared to be functioning normally.

Stewart's former English teacher at Pearl River High School, who remained in contact with her through Facebook, called the accident "heartbreaking."

"She was one of my students and a bright, sweet girl loved by everyone," said Doreen Arney. "I knew that she was getting married, and to Brian. To happen to two such special kids ? it just shouldn't happen."

CONCACAF bans Klinsmann for Gold Cup final

CHICAGO (AP) ? The U.S. soccer team will be missing a key figure for the Gold Cup final against Panama on Sunday: their coach.

Jurgen Klinsmann was suspended for one game Friday by CONCACAF's disciplinary committee, the result of his ejection in the 87th minute of a 3-1 victory over Honduras in the semifinals Wednesday. Klinsmann was dismissed "for showing dissent towards the referee by throwing the ball in a violent manner," the disciplinary committee found, and said FIFA rules require anyone ejected from a match to be suspended for the following game.

The decision cannot be appealed.

"I don't think it changes too much," U.S. captain DaMarcus Beasley said Friday. "It's always good to have him on the bench, but he'll give his wisdom before the game ... make sure we get off on the right foot. But it's not going to be the same not seeing his face on the sideline, giving us instructions when we need it and being the enthusiastic person that he is on the bench. Especially, when we score or he needs to tell us something if we need to change something."

Klinsmann was irate Wednesday after the referee failed to issue cards on a series of hard fouls against the Americans. He could be seen yelling and gesturing angrily in the direction of the referee, and was told to leave the field after he slammed a ball into the ground.

Klinsmann later apologized, saying he acted out of frustration.

"I was talking to the ref as well. There weren't any cards," Beasley said. "I got hit three, four times in somewhat the same sequence, and they didn't call anything but a foul. So I could understand his frustration. I was frustrated."

The Americans are seeking their fifth Gold Cup title. They also are looking to extend their record 10-game winning streak in all matches.

"This is what he lives and dies for," Eddie Johnson said. "This is the opportunity that American soccer has been wanting, to have a coach with such experience, who's played at the highest level and played on big teams and managed big players, to be in this position to help us get to where we're trying to go in American soccer."

TheDC Morning: John Edwards is back | The Daily Caller

Like to laugh? Like to be informed? Then sign up for?TheDC Morning email here.

1.)?John Edwards is back ? but this time his name is Anthony Weiner?? It?s hard to be shocked by anything Anthony Weiner does given what we know he did, but frankly it?s hard to believe this. TheDC?s Neil Munro reports:

?Democrat Anthony Weiner and his wife brazenly stood side-by-side at a late-afternoon press conference, telling reporters that they love each other and will keep campaigning for the mayor?s office in New York.?The defiant stand took place only hours after a?gossip website produced?a new stream of crudely sexual test sent by Weiner to a 22-year-old woman, and it prompted angry response by embarrassed pro-feminist Democrats.??Anthony has made some horrible mistakes, both before he resigned from Congress and after, but I do really strongly believe that is between us and our marriage,? said his wife, Huma Abedin. ?I love him, I?ve forgiven him, I believe in him, and as we?d said from the beginning, we?re moving forward,? Abedin told a roomful of journalists and cameras that broadcast the press conference on cable television nationwide.?

The shocking aspect of this story, of course, is that Weiner continued to engage in lewd online conversations with random women AFTER he was forced to resign from Congress in disgrace for doing just that. What makes this a John Edwards-level act of ?narcissism is that after having already publicly humiliated his wife, he not only continued to engage in the same behavior but he also decided that he was fit to run for elected office again. John Edwards ran for president while having an affair and knowing that in the remote ? though not entirely impossible ? chance he won the Democratic nomination, he would risk his party?s chance of winning the presidency if his affair got out. Weiner ran for mayor knowing that his post-Congress pervy Twitter convos would likely be revealed and again embarrass his family. What?s more, they could have been revealed after he won the Democratic primary, which means he ran knowing that depending on when these convos got out, he could potentially imperial his party?s almost-certain victory in the mayoral race. Weiner is a special kind of awful. If New York City still elects him after all of this, well, they deserve what they get.

2.)?Tea party cover?? Mitch McConnell has a primary challenger from the right. In a completely unrelated story, he?s making sure the tea party knows they have a friend in him. TheDC?s Alex Pappas reports:

?With just hours before he finds himself with a Republican primary challenger, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell spent Tuesday evening courting tea party and conservative groups during a private gathering of activists and lawmakers inside the Capitol. ?What you guys have provided is the energy, the enthusiasm and the arguments to push back on this incredible assault,? McConnell said, according to a source in the room. ?No issue illustrates that better than Obamacare.??The closed door ?Tea Party Legislative Forum? ? which was also attended by a host of conservative lawmakers including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Utah Sen. Mike Lee ? could not have come at a better time for McConnell.?For months, the Kentucky Republican has been wooing tea party activists and working hard to fend off a potential primary challenge from the right in 2014. But on Wednesday, first-time candidate Matt Bevin is set to announce a campaign to take on McConnell.?

3.)Boehner blast?? He cries. He also yells. TheDC?s Alex Pappas reports:

?Speaker of the House John Boehner snapped at a reporter Tuesday when the journalist accused the lawmaker of playing no substantial role in the immigration debate on Capitol Hill.?During a weekly House GOP press availability, the Ohio Republican appeared annoyed when he interrupted a reporter who asserted as fact that Boehner has taken a ?hands off approach on immigration.? ?Woah, woah, woah, woah, stop,? Boehner said, not letting the reporter finish the question. ?Just stop.? ?Let?s get back to the premise of the question,? he said. ?Nobody has spent more time trying to fix a broken immigration?system?than I have.??

4.)Bob?s sob?? When you?ve done something wrong, suck it up and apologize ? on Twitter. TheDC?s Alexis Levinson reports:

?Scandal-plagued Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell publicly apologized on Tuesday and announced that he has personally repaid questionable loans from a political donor.?Reports over the last few months have exposed various?improprieties?in McDonnell?s relationship with Star Scientific?CEO?Jonnie Williams Sr. Williams, among other things, paid the $15,000 catering bill for McDonnell?s daughter?s wedding, made a $50,000 loan to McDonnell?s wife in 2011, and made two other loans, totally over $70,000 to a real estate company that the governor owns with his sister.?While the world had it?s eyes glued on the door of St. Mary?s Hospital, waiting for the arrival of the royal baby, McDonnell quietly released an?apology?for that on?Twitter, and announced that the two loans had been repaid, with interest ? $52,278.17 for the loan to his wife, and $71, 837.00 for the loans to the real estate firm.?

Google Earth versus ATSB

The Google message to the ATSB

On checking the new feature on the ATSB web site, the ?active investigations map?, in the off chance that it had respected the unanimously adverse findings of a Senate committee inquiry into its handing of the Pel-Air crash near Norfolk Island in 2009 and re-opened it, the above message from Google appears instead.

This suggests the ATSB knows as much about running a web site as it does about conducting an honest, thorough and useful to aviation safety investigation in which it regarded as immaterial evidence that CASA internally recognised it had neglected to carry out its duties of oversight of the operator Pel-Air.

The Senate Committee report into Aviation Safety Investigations can be found on this page and downloaded in full or by parts. Including a complete chapter as to why the committee lost confidence in the evidence given by the chief commissioner of the ATSB, Martin Dolan, as well as a reference by the committee of CASA to the Australian Federal Police over a possible breach of the Transport Safety Investigations Act.

A relevant address to the Senate by Senator David Fawcett in relation to the failings of the ATSB and CASA can also be read here.

No doubt the ATSB web site will be fixed soon. But the stench of dangerous incompetence and abuse of process by the ATSB may take longer to fix, and the price for so doing could prove to be very costly.

NFL Rookies Prove Drawing a Tough Task with Hilarious Panini Artwork Cards

Every last NFL rookie entering the NFL has tremendous talent. Unfortunately for most, that talent doesn't extend to making beautiful artwork.?

Panini America is back with another art gallery of sorts. The card company caught up with a number of NFL players and asked them to sit down and draw.?

As they note in their release, the results have been both intriguing and profitable in the past. For example, Andrew Luck's drawing of Lucas Oil Field?at least that's what we think it is?auctioned for $1,500 on eBay, via CBS Sports.?

Some might see drawings better suited for the refrigerator door; others see priceless collectibles they simply must have.?

With that, we give you this year's lot: the good, the bad and the ugly.?

The Seattle Seahawks Christine Michael is ecstatic about this "seahawk." By comparison, that green and blue bird seems rather annoyed to be on a card at the moment.?

The Bills' Marquise Goodwin has easily my favorite drawing of the lot. I say Buffalo just ditches their current logo and places this on their helmets immediately.?

Show me your lightning bolt, Manti Te'o!

The Chargers rookie better hope the season goes better than this rather depressing bolt.?

Matt Barkley actually did pretty well drawing an eagle.?

But had some issues with his skyline.?

Eddie Lacy decided to draw a "cheese head."

Nailed it!

My own drawings would be far below anything these rookies might deliver. Still, it's fun to sit back and laugh or applaud as is warranted.?

This incoming class of rookies has been interviewed, tested and examined by general mangers, coaches and fans.?

Still, one of the most entertaining tests continues to be the moment?Panini asks them kindly to pause their hectic lives to draw their interpretation of art.?

A hat tip to all these young guys giving us some laughs and a whole bunch of masterpieces.?

What Mortgage-Rate Flux Means for House ... - AOL Real Estate

toy home on $100 billsBy Shelby Bremer

Though average mortgage interest rates fell ever so slightly last week, according to the Primary Mortgage Market Survey from Freddie Mac, many real estate experts see this as more of a stabilization after a sudden spike, than an indicator of future trends. Last week's rates for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage averaged at around 4.37 percent, over half a point higher than their lowest this year, 3.35 percent in early May.

This year also began with rates at 3.34 percent for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage, but professionals across the board are saying rates won't be that low again.

Dr. Joseph R. Mason, professor at Louisiana State University, says that we might see normal fluctuations, but rates are still desirable now. "While there could be some temporary blips to slightly lower than today," he commented, "there is not much room for downside." This is consistent with what real estate professionals are seeing on the ground in various markets, as well.

Cindy Marlowe, a RE/MAX Realtor in the Denver-metro area, says of the upswing in mortgage rates: "The downside to the buyer is that their money doesn't quite go as far, so they will purchase slightly less house than a few months ago. However, I haven't seen any evidence of this increase keeping buyers away from the market that are looking to buy." But Anthony Kamouzis, owner of Prudential One Realty in Phoenix, Arizona, says he has seen some tightening of the purse strings in his market.

He offered an example: "In my area, the blue-collar worker is down at around 110,000 on the affordability index, which has become the bottom of the market. Remember that prices have gone up 35 percent in some areas of the country. Couple that with a 1 percent interest rate increase, and now the person who barely qualified for their first home is out." He did say that demand is still high compared to inventory, but increases in interest rates will price out buyers and eventually decrease demand.

Mason gave a different reason for shifts in homebuying trends. "Rates are not dictating buying activity right now so much as inventory," he said. "There is a lot of shadow inventory that is pressing down demand. In many markets, speculation for rentals is also skewing home buying decisions."

Should Buyers Jump In ... Or Wait?: Erica Ramus, broker and owner of RAMUS Realty Group in Pottsville, Pa., says that she's advising buyers to buy sooner rather than later, but only if they're truly ready. "Don't buy a house simply because you are afraid rates will go higher," she offers. "Buy a house because you have a need, a desire, and can afford it. But don't be scared into buying something you're not ready for, or don't truly love, because the media is screaming that you have to buy now or you'll miss out on these low rates."

She also echoed many other real estate professionals in saying, "People need to remember that these are historical low rates we've had the past few years. They couldn't last forever and will go up."
Rates are difficult to predict, and estimations on future trends are highly speculative. Most experts are in agreement that rates will increase toward the end of the year, and to deal with this, Ramus shared some advice: "You simply adjust your expectations and how much house you buy based on what you can afford, factoring in the interest rate."

Facebook Chat Stickers: What Are They & Should You Use Them? [Weekly Facebook Tips]

Facebook Chat Stickers: What Are They & Should You Use Them? [Weekly Facebook Tips]

When you chat via instant messenger clients, do you add smileys? Do you also like to add other emoticons to let people know when you?re hungry, bored, stressed and the rest? If so, you?ll probably enjoy using Facebook?s new stickers. These honestly-not-at-all-just-like-an-emoticon images are the latest craze for Facebook IM and they?re quite a bit of fun. How different are they from regular emoticons? Well, just you wait and see.

In fairly recent news, Facebook released chat stickers for the Facebook web client. For some reason this has been huge news, despite chat stickers being around on the iOS and Android clients for a few months now. Why? Well, because they?re fun. And now you can try them out, regardless of your mobile device and preferred OS. So, let?s take a look.

How Do I Use Chat Stickers?

Using Facebook chat stickers is really simple. When you?re chatting to a friend, click on the smiley face at the bottom-right of the composer box. A choice of sticker packs will come up and you can choose firstly which pack to use, then which sticker to send. The sticker is sent instantly to your friend.

How Can I Get Free Chat Stickers?

To get more stickers, click on the shopping cart icon instead of choosing a sticker collection. At the moment, there are many sticker packs available for free. In time, no doubt paid chat stickers will become available too.

Adding sticker packs will give you easy access to the sticker styles you like best from the numerous cute sticker packs available. You will then be able to quickly add stickers to IM chats from all of your favourite sticker collections.

More Ways To Get Chat Stickers

There are already private sites for getting more chat stickers, developed between Facebook?s mobile release and web release of chat stickers. One selection of custom chat stickers is available as the ChatStickers Chrome extension.

It?s aimed at Reddit fans, featuring AdviceAnimals pictures, memes and rage faces, and reaction faces. As far as reasons for using stickers go, this gets to the heart of it. When you need the perfect response to something a friend has said, you now have Reddit-style reaction faces on hand to respond appropriately in a matter of seconds.

Hidden Stickers

The ChatStickers Facebook Page both enlightens readers as to the concept of ?Hidden Stickers? and exposes stickers for what they really are: Just pictures. On their page there are a number of sticker images with instructions on how to use it as a hidden sticker. You share the image as a private message, and voila! It?s a sticker. Now, just think about this. You can do that with any image you like. Yes, hidden stickers are images you can?t yet find in a Facebook sticker collection.

Facebook Chat Stickers Vs. Emoticons

So, why is Facebook suddenly going crazy with stickers instead of leaving us be with our old friends, the emoticons? Well, I think it?s to do with the size of the images and the resulting colour injected into messages. I think also, with the new addition of images in comments, that we will soon be able to put stickers into regular Facebook comments too.

Stickers are different than emoticons. They?re detailed illustrations of characters with personality. Sending stickers is a way to share how you?re feeling with your friends. When you tap a sticker, it automatically sends it to the friend you?re chatting with. ? Facebook

What?s the real difference between the two? Well, emoticons rest in-line with your text and can sometimes be typed in by using the right combination of characters, eg. :) will turn into a smiley emoticon. Stickers can?t be invoked via text and are sent as a separate line to text.

If you?re mid-way through typing something in Facebook web chat and you send a sticker, your text will still be waiting for you in the composer section, unsent. This is not always the case with the mobile clients though. Some of them have been known to delete your text if you send a sticker while you?re typing.

Conclusion: Will Facebook Stickers Stick?

In short, Facebook stickers are really just images. What makes sticker packs useful and fun though, is that they?re colourful and expressive in much the same way as emoticons are, yet they are bigger than emoticons, not sent in-line with text and are more varied in nature. Adding your favourite sticker packs means you have quick access to cute images which you can send in response to conversations with friends. And why not?

What do you think of Facebook stickers? Have you given them a go or will you stick with your emoticons for now?

GSK: caught up in a Chinese puzzle

Corruption is perhaps the easiest charge to raise in China, such is its pervasiveness. While the pharmaceutical industry globally has repeatedly been found guilty of bribery, in China it is one of the most basic requirements of doing business. Whatever GSK?s sins may be, the company has clearly become a political target of the Communist Party. Not only has it been roundly attacked in the state media, but all mention of it has been censored on the internet and banned from social media, as the party moves to quash any questioning voices.

And there remain plenty of important questions about what has happened. Why, for example, have GSK executives and staffers been placed under extra-legal detention, rather than formally arrested? Why has a British fraud investigator disappeared and what is his connection to the case?

Why have key pieces of evidence been announced loudly by Gao Feng, the head of the investigation, before the process has finished? Why, if GSK used 700 middlemen to funnel bribes to doctors, has only one of them been publicly named?

There are questions for GSK to answer as well. Can it really be true, as Sir Andrew repeated yesterday, that the company had no idea what four of its most senior executives in China, including the head of operations, human resources and compliance, were up to? If that is the case, perhaps Mark Reilly, the head of the Chinese operation who fled back to London earlier this month, should be sacked for negligence.

Why did the company perform such an enormous volte-face, admitting guilt over the affair, just one month after boldly declaring that it had spent four months and ?significant resources? to ?thoroughly investigate each and every claim? and found ?no evidence of corruption or bribery in our China business??

The precise nature of the political game that is under way is unclear. What began with a regulatory probe into a dossier of suspicious sales information has snowballed into a movement against a number of companies, all of them European.

?Why are only European companies involved in this?? asked the rival pharmaceutical company executive. ?Is something going on between China and Europe? Is GSK doing something that Pfizer wasn?t? I do not think so.?

Last August, the US Securities and Exchange Commission said that Wyeth, a subsidiary of Pfizer, had bribed doctors in China with cash to recommend its products, using fake invoices to cover the payments. Pfizer settled the case without admitting guilt. Hao Junbo, a lawyer at the Lehman Law Firm in Beijing, immediately submitted a case to the Chinese authorities demanding an investigation, but Pfizer remains untouched.

Whatever the truth of Pfizer?s actions, the Chinese accusations against GSK have a hollow ring to them. The authorities have painted the company as a fiendish foreign multinational ramping up prices for poor Chinese patients, but drugs companies have little control over the final price of their products in China.

While many medicines in China are dramatically overpriced, it is the hospitals that decide the mark-up on prescriptions, and indeed rely on that mark-up for a large share of their income. GSK may have bribed doctors to win market share, but its actions did not affect the price of its drugs.

Some have suggested that GSK has fallen victim to China?s stated desire to boost the fortunes of its own drugs companies; others believe that GSK is being made a scapegoat to force the rest of the sector to behave better. Internally, the company believes it has fallen foul of its well-connected former head of government affairs, who has now brought the might of the Communist Party to bear. That, at least, may have provided the initial impetus for the investigation to be transferred from regulator to police.

Yesterday another ominous warning was issued by Xinhua, the state news agency. ?It will not be surprising if more pharmaceutical companies and hospitals, domestic or international, are to be involved in probes in the days to come,? it said in an editorial. ?Big international firms should shoulder [their] due responsibilities to bid farewell to malpractice, setting a good example and serving as a wake-up call for domestic pharmaceutical companies.?

AstraZeneca has seen two of its sales managers taken in for questioning, and while the company maintains that it is an unrelated investigation, the timing of the police?s arrival is worrying. At least two other international drug companies ? UCB, a Belgian firm, and Baxter International ? are also mired in investigations.

Meanwhile, it emerged that more than 1,000 doctors in 73 hospitals in the south-eastern city of Zhangzhou have been investigated for taking kickbacks. If the Chinese government really believes that ?323 million was paid out by GSK to Chinese doctors and health officials, presumably there will be more arrests shortly.

Other companies should beware, because in China there remains no line between business and politics. In recent years there has been plenty of political pushback against foreign firms who are perceived to have grown rich on the backs of Chinese customers. Apple, Volkswagen, Walmart and Hewlett Packard have all found themselves accused of exploiting Chinese consumers. The barbs against Apple continue to make news in China, with a story in the People?s Daily yesterday accusing the company of not paying all the donations it pledged to victims of an earthquake in Sichuan.

For years the Chinese government has been trying to boost its local vaccines industry, but it has found that patients preferred to trust serums developed and made by GSK. Now the company has misjudged its hand and given the government, and the economic interests behind the government, an opportunity to attack.

Few foreign firms, historically, have managed to crack China?s market. Those that do come under increasing pressure from the government, especially if they compete against local firms. The struggle between GSK and the Chinese authorities has yet to be played out, but already the lesson to other companies is clear: always remember that in China, the Communist Party is investigator, judge, jury and executioner.

Man accused of threatening anchors over coverage

PHOENIX (AP) ? A New York man has been arrested on allegations that he made threats on Twitter against two Turner Broadcasting anchors who angered him with their coverage of the Jodi Arias trial, Arizona authorities said Monday.

David Lee Simpson of Bath, N.Y, was infatuated with Arias and became upset by comments from the two female anchors, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Investigators found guns, handcuffs and other items in Simpson's car after taking him into custody in Bath, Arpaio said.

The sheriff declined to name the two anchors because he says Turner Broadcasting had asked his agency not to publicly identify them. But he did say one works out of Atlanta and the other out of New York.

An indictment that charges Simpson, 48, with three counts of computer tampering and two counts of stalking had not yet been made publicly available late Monday afternoon.

Simpson also is accused of threatening a Phoenix woman who defended the anchors online.

Arpaio says Simpson quit his job last week at a Bath auto repair shop and was later pulled over by police as he was leaving town.

The sheriff said investigators don't know whether Simpson was intending to carry out his threats, but he said items found in Simpson's vehicle were disturbing. Authorities found several guns, handcuffs, zip ties and a news clipping about last December's mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Simpson is expected to be brought to Arizona on Wednesday, Arpaio said. Court records show he does not yet have a lawyer.

Earlier this year, a Maricopa County jury convicted Arias of murder in the death of her boyfriend Travis Alexander, but the jury later deadlocked at the sentencing phase of her trial.

A new jury could be impaneled to decide sometime in late September whether Arias should be sentenced to death or life in prison.

Steve Spear of St. Charles is on a mission few people have accomplished.

?It has been the highest of highs and the lowest of lows,? Spear said.

Spear, 49, is running an average of a marathon a day from coast-to-coast to raise $1.5 million to provide clean water for a Kenyan village of 30,000 people.

The former pastor?s 3,243-mile path took him to St. Charles Saturday, where he was greeted with a hometown rally of about 300 friends and supporters in the parking lot of Dick Pond Athletics.

He began his run April 8 from the Santa Monica Pier in California, with a plan to reach New York City in August.

About 50 supporters joined Spear where the route began in Elburn Saturday and at two water stops in La Fox and west of St. Charles. The route crossed country roads leading to the Great Western Trail in western Kane County.

Shalise Hickman, of West Chicago, was one of the followers that joined him in the final seven-mile stretch at La Fox Road and Route 38. Another group joined him at a three-mile mark on Dean Street on the trail.

?Running with him gave me a snapshot of what he has been struggling with and persevering through. I am inspired,? Hickman said.

Spear said he is on his eighth pair of running shoes.

?Being with the energy of a group puts adrenaline in my veins,? he said.

Spear said he has had tremendous moments meeting people but other times the run has been brutal.

?I have a strong faith in God and feel his protection and the prayers of people,? he said.

Spear said for whatever reason he has a body type that seems to recover and stay immune to injury. He took up long-distance running for a cause seven years ago.

Spear left his work this year as pastor of a satellite church of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington to follow something close to his heart.

Spear initiated a ?Running for Water? campaign through Team World Vision, a Christian nonprofit organization that empowers groups and individuals to dedicate their sports and fitness goals to its efforts in Africa.

He had run a Chicago Marathon in 2007 and a 56-mile Ultra Marathon in Africa in 2009, both for Team World Vision.

His initiative was inspired by the millions of children around the world and a 7-year-old girl he met in Kenya.

Spear said he has a picture of Winnie in his RV.

?I think of her about 45 times a day, especially when it gets rough,? he said.

He said families have to walk six to 10 miles a day every day to collect contaminated water in old fuel containers, which weigh up to 50 pounds.

Spear made a mile and a half walk where Winnie and her mother draw water and after he experienced the contaminated water source and carried a container on his back it stayed on his mind.

?Water is something we take for granted,? he said.

Spear said almost a billion people on the planet don?t have access to clean water.

?It leads to disease and death and kids can?t be in school, especially girls because they are the majority of the water carriers,? he said.

He said World Vision has the largest, privately funded water project on the continent of Africa. He said $50 is all it takes for one person to have clean water for life.
